The Psychological Effects of a Pandemic

There are many studies out there for which you can read about that discuss the various effects from a pandemic and how it particularly affects the mind, body and spirit. Most studies are based on data gathered from all over the world about research that has been conducted but rarely do you really become aware of the testimonials behind each individual studied. The purpose of this article is to inform you of ways to stay healthy in all three aspects: mind, body and spirit. Whether you have been directly affected by a pandemic such as COVID-19 or whether you have had to change your lifestyle based on the current circumstances, one way or another, it is an effect that can certainly take a toll on us. There have been questions prompted in terms of what to do in order to feel at peace, feel healthier and keep our sanity through it all. Below, are a few examples of what those questions look like and what can be done about it. You can always book a 1:1 session with me if you are someone who prefers to seek continuous change and growth throughout your life.

Q: How can I obtain motivation and courage when I have lost my job, my finances have changed and I continuously feel like I am not getting anywhere?

A: You are not alone. As a result of many changes, everyone's dynamic has been affected in ways that were never imagined. One of the things you can do is to practice a few breathing techniques every morning while rehearsing a mantra that will help you attract abundance and love into your heart. You cannot blame yourself for any external changes that have occurred in your life that were certainly out of your control. Learning to do this is hard, but your determination for change strengthens when you start believing that you are invincible. Every challenge you face is an opportunity for change and growth. It doesn't have to necessarily be a bad thing if you shift your lens and see the good behind it all. Perhaps it is time for you to change jobs and finally do something you enjoy. Perhaps you are someone who needed to get out of their comfort zone and needed to seek elsewhere where you are able to fully demonstrate your skills and abilities. Perhaps you should be earning more pay than you actually think and it had to take everything possible to make you aware of your true value. These are a few mindset beliefs that can be learned in order to obtain motivation and courage to keep on going.

Q: I feel like I have lost myself in my own mind space and all I keep thinking about are my problems? I am not getting out as much and I feel as if I were losing my mind. What can I do about this?

A: First and foremost, you are not losing your mind. One of the things that occurs in times as such is that you are gravitating to spending most, if not all of your time in one place. Although there may not be many places you'd want to go to, spending time outside in nature is one of the most healing things you can do for both your mind and body. In fact, you may feel as if you are being attacked by your haunting thoughts each and every day, but yet, if you walk in nature for at least 30 min. a day, you will realize that your cortisol levels will decrease. This can also have a positive effect on your anger levels and stress levels throughout the day. Staying hydrated with water throughout the day will also significantly impact your stress hormones because in the past, studies have shown that dehydration leads to higher cortisol levels. In fact, staying hydrated will allow you to be better equipped in facing every day's challenges.

Q: I find myself pacing around the house and I don't know how or what to do to stay grounded. What are some recommendations?

A: I always like to encourage my clients to do something that will bring them back to their childhood happiness. For instance, coloring, watching an old movie, eating a favorite home-made dish or buying yourself something that would make your inner child happy is something that I have learned has helped my clients a lot throughout the course of time. This will not only help you feel grounded to your inner self but it will bring that happiness from within yourself. If you are a spiritual person, prayer before starting your day is also very helpful. This allows yourself to surrender and helps release your worries and problems to that divine higher self. If you are not a person of prayer, perhaps creating or reciting a mantra can also be of great benefit as it trains your mind to change its belief system and break through any limited beliefs. Staying true to your heart's desires is important and finding techniques as such, is a great way to staying grounded.
